Victims of recent California wildfires may qualify for a one-time $770 payment through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Announced by President Joe Biden, this initiative aims to provide quick relief for essential needs like food, baby formula, and prescriptions to those affected by the devastating wildfires.

Eligibility Criteria for the $770 Payment

To receive the $770 serious needs assistance payment, survivors must meet specific requirements and complete an application through FEMA. The criteria include:

  • Completing a FEMA application at DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-3362.
  • Confirmation of identity by FEMA.
  • Residency in the wildfire-affected area for most of the year.
  • Proof of disaster-related damage via a home inspection or documentation.
  • Evidence of displacement, need for shelter, or other emergency costs.
  • Applying within the program’s availability period.

“Your unique situation determines the amount of assistance you may receive,” FEMA states, noting that not every applicant will receive the same payment.

Additional Federal Assistance for Wildfire Victims

Beyond the $770 payment, FEMA offers various programs to support wildfire survivors:

  • Displacement Assistance: Covers housing costs for up to two weeks if a home is uninhabitable. This can include expenses for staying in hotels, with friends, or elsewhere.
  • Temporary Housing and Repairs: Grants for temporary housing, home repairs, and essential household items.
  • Financial and Emotional Support: Programs include unemployment payments, low-interest loans for uninsured losses, and crisis counseling.

Beware of Scams

FEMA warns disaster victims to remain vigilant against scams. Fraudulent schemes often promise access to cash payments or expedited aid but could compromise sensitive personal information. Only use official FEMA channels for assistance.

Relief Efforts in Action

“People impacted by these fires are going to receive a one-time payment of $770,” said President Biden during a White House briefing. Nearly 6,000 survivors have already registered, with $5.1 million disbursed to date.

This effort underscores the federal government’s commitment to aiding wildfire survivors during their recovery. For more information, visit DisasterAssistance.gov.
